From most of the catalogs I have come across, the only C64 hard drive
available is made by Xetec and it sells for more than $700 !!!

Actually, the major drive you will find is the Xetec. New
ranges from about $900 to $1100. If you can find it for $700,
you are lucky! If you check the used market out, there are
also hard drives (20 meg) made by ICT. I have one. It is put
together like 120 1541 disks. The drive is not nearly as fast
as the Xetec, but can usually be gotten for cheaper. ICT also
has the ability for easy upgrade with a new circuit board and
a cheap Seagate drive. Only problem is finding the circuit board.
If anyone has an idea on where to get it, I would appreciate it.

If you don't want 20 megs, there are also smaller drives available.
I also have a JCT 5 meg drive.

25.5 megs on-line.

P.S. The board is run on the ICT and JCT hard drives. I also know
several people with Xetecs, so if you have questions....

This has annoyed me for almost a decade. I understand why a full
emulation of the 1541 operating system costs so much, but why isn't
a partial emulation available?

Gimme a SCSI interface for my 128/64, and let me buy one of the cheapo
(reconditioned) hard drives I see advertised in the _Computer Shopper_!
10MB costs less than $99 now, and ten megabytes will do me just fine for
my Commodore.. I can even do without the blinding speed of the Xetec
harddrives; if I could buy that SCSI interface for +/- $100 I would do
the DOS emulation myself.

Anyone know of a cheap SCSI interface for the 64? Or schematics to build
one? How about scematics/plans to emulate an IBM 8-bit card slot? :-)

David

I have a 7.5 meg CBM 9090 HD w/ a buscard II interface. I used it to run a bbs
on my 64. (the good old days). Oh well, I don't need it anymore so make
me an offer I can't refuse. (It runs great, much faster than a 1541, plus
it was made by Commodore so the command set is the same as the 1541)
Formats fine, no bad blocks.

(Anyone have any ideas how to ship this thing? does the head autopark or what?)

At World of Commodore this weekend Creative Micro Devices (JiffyDOS fame)
showed a 20 Meg. 3.5" SCSI hard drive for the C64/128. They say it will
ship by year end and cost less than $750. It works on the serial bus
or "very fast" through a their RAMLink adapter ($100) for the REU.
[I have no connection with CMD except as a customer.]

The WOC show had 50 exhibitors. At least half had C64/128 stuff in
addition to Amiga. I did not see any noteworthy seminars.
Commodore Business Machines was there was the normal displays.

Well, I have been offered $200 by two people so far, so I guess it'll
go to the highest bidder. Send mail or call me at (302)-292-2622 anytime.
(I'd say best bid by Friday takes it...)
