[comp.sys.cbm] ~ and | in terminal emulators, ftp archives

bbadger@x102c.harris-atd.com (Badger BA 64810) (10/11/89)

I'm tired of not being able to type ~ and | in my terminal emulator programs.
I have XMODEM 4.0 and MACHTERM and Multi 7.4. (I'm not totally sure about
the version numbers.) I downloaded these from BBS's, so I don't have
documentation. Does anyone know how to get REGULAR ASCII from these
programs? It's pretty hard to use csh in UNIX without ~ and |.

Also, are there other (better) modem type programs? I downloaded
KERMIT for C64, but I can't get it to boot. What's this DESTERM I
keep hearing about? Shareware?

Are there ftp-able archives you know of?
I've heard rumors that
	128.208.1.14 blake.acs.washington.edu
	129.97.128.1 watmath.waterloo.edu
have c64 stuff, but I haven't seen any myself.
On the other hand,
128.46.135.3 maxwell.physics.purdue.edu
has c64 kermit stuff:

I use a program that I have been very satisfied with. I got it
from the CB Librarys on Compuserve. It's called CB Term v6.7
and it includes key coding for ~ , | and others. One of my
favorite features is that the character set is the easiest to
read of any I've seen. It also provides a split screen with an
80 character buffer line that saves typed transmissions until
you hit a return. (This can be turned off). It also has a pretty
good sized buffer for storing transactions or for loading text files
to be sent by ASCII dump.

If anyone is interested I'll try to post it.

I'm not sure CBTerm can be postted here: its on-line distribution is
legally limited to CompuServe. Any netter with a CIS account is welcome,
of course, to download it there.

In eighty-column mode the split screen cannot be removed, but you can select
character-by-character or line-by-line transmission. Your keystrokes will
echo there regardless of what happens in the main part of the screen, so if
you are entering a password with onlookers present, switch to forty-column
mode while you type the password.

I've not used version 6.7 much (I hate its font and have had no luck
replacing it with the font from version 4.5), but version 4.5 had a problem
with PETSCII files. It could read them from disk but not write them
properly. CBTerm stores buffer data in true ASCII and converts to/from
PETSCII when it writes to/reads from the disk, and the ASCII --> PETSCII
routines were flawed. I got around it by storing files in true ASCII and
dealing with their condition when I used them later. Version 6.7 might have
this problem fixed.

The other problem of note is that CBTerm sends an initialization command
before every DOS command: as a result, if you are using a 1581, it keeps
popping back to the root directory and won't stay inside a partition. The
character set also (this might be fixedd in version 6.7) couldn't handle
shifted characters in filenames.

CBTerm's VT52 emulation doesn't include downscrolling but has most of the
other features. All in all it is a darn good program for the 64 at 300 or
1200 bps, and I've recommended it to several friends (and relied on it myself
while my RGBI monitor was in the shop), but I am quite sure that its
copyright forbids posting on telecommunications systems other than CompuServe.

I'm not quite sure just how to interpret the copyright notice for
CBterm. It says that the pgm may be uploaded to "LOCAL BBs" only
and not to any commercial BB.

I suppose that usenet doesn't qualify as local so I'll refrain
from posting it here.

Actually, it may not matter, since I am having no success at trying
to upload it to our ftp site with KERMIT (we have no xmodem on-board).
