[comp.sys.cbm] c64 and cbm4040 drives?

I have access to CMB4040 disk drives and a c64 link cartridge.
Has anyone ever experienced any problems with this setup?

I have used a 4040 drive with my 64. It works great from BASIC.
If you are doing your own programming, you will be very pleased
with the performance compared to the 1541.

If however you want to use commercial software, you may be
out of luck. I found that even unprotected software had problems.
There are two primary causes of this:
the software either
expects to own the 64 and overwrites the interface software
(either the software itself or at least the vector to it)
or
expects the disc to be a 1541
(either for custom disc I/O or copy protection).

I found only one piece of commercial software to acknowledge
the 4040 and work with it. That was the word processor called
OMNIWRITER. (OMNIWRITER also supposedly supported the 1520
plotter, but got the device number wrong!)

Working with the 4040 and a 488 BUS interface from MSD, I got very
frustrated with copy protected software. Free/Shareware was often
just as bad because of programmers assuming only the standard
devices and assuming ownership of everything, including all
vectors.

As a friend of mine always said, " no fun " 8^(3

good luck to you.
