Just a quick question - have many people used the Mac<-->Geos program from Joe Buckley that I posted here? I have used it a fair amount, but in all cases have used the 'MacPaint' images on a Sun Workstation. When I have tried to view the images on a REAL MacIntosh, I am missing the proper resource fork (= the icon/info block in Geos). Has anyone solved this problem? If so how? Joe tells me now that he really wrote it for a AMAX (Mac Emulator) on an Amiga and did not care if a true Mac could read it.... Thanks E-Mail or posting are fine, but posting would help more people, I think... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We know only the strong will survive, But the meek will inherit. In article <1714@ncrcce.StPaul.NCR.COM>, (Joel Peter Anderson) says: > >... When I have tried to view the images on >a REAL MacIntosh, I am missing the proper >resource fork. I believe you can reconstruct this information by using MacTools. If you enter MacTools, highlight the file, and choose InfoEdit File, it will prompt you for the filename, and two other pieces of info, "File Type" and "File Creator." Enter these 4-character codes into those spots to turn the document into a Macpaint file: Type: PNTG Creator: MPNT Then exit out of Tools and save the info if prompted (depending on what version of MacTools you are using.) Now this may or may not change the icon once you are back at the desktop, depending on whether you have ever had another MacPaint file on that disk to install the icon in the desktop file. Anyway, the file should now be readable by MacPaint. Let me know if this works for ya! :-) Kurt

Since we last wrote... Randy Winchester wrote me (thanks randy) to note that he had been a beta tester for the MAC<-->GEO/Paint conversion software. He said, and I tried, that you should download the Geos->Mac converted MacPaint picture as a 'MacBinary'. The Resource fork >IS< contained in the file. Non-Mac computers (I assume) such as the Sun I use at work are savvy to this and skip the resource fork portion of the MacPaint image. This has been marginally successful - the image is now recognized as a MacPaint image, but has a few errors... this may be the result of other factors, which I will be toying with... BTW - the other issue lately discussed, namely that of GeoWrite conversion, is true - I have successfully printed a GeoWrite doc on our Sun LaserWriter (really an Apple Laserwriter in disguise). The main trick is 1) use the PS.patch to 'fix' your copy of GeoLaser, (that was posted here by some well meaning hacker wasn't it?) 2)printing your file with that (produces a sequential text postscript file) and 3)sending that file to a computer that can print it as postscript. At my site I must add a header to the file for it to be recognized properly - something like: %!PS-Adobe-1.0 %%Creator: ssd1a:anderson (Joel Anderson) %%Title: stdin %%CreationDate: Mon Nov 20 08:56:20 1989 %%DocumentFonts: Times-Roman Times-Italic Times-Bold Symbol Times-Roman DIThacks %%Pages: (atend) %%EndComments ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We know only the strong will survive, But the meek will inherit.
