A friend of mine is interested in getting a modem to use with a C64. He wants one which he could later use with a PC. Can a 2400 baud modem be used with a C64? (would it be any faster than a 1200?) And which types of modems (ie. which protocalls) can be used with a C64? Thanks -Chris Joerg cfj@jj.lcs.mit.edu

This isn't a commercial plug, but if you can't find their ads in magazines such as RUN, then (I forget their USmail address) you should know it costs $99.95 + shipping (a little less than $108.00 after shipping for me, but I don't know if UPS costs increase w/ distance). In my opinion, it's well worth it as compared to their $60-65 Minimodem-C w/ a max of 1200 baud. You also get a disk w/ 4 term programs, 2 for upto 1200 baud and 2 for upto 2400 baud. A form for subscription to CompuServe also came with it and although it's up to you on how to get C-serves logon packet (stores, mail, etc.) with this pamphlet, you do have an offer to get approx $15 or 2 hours credit for startup, depending on the baud rate you use. Again, this isn't an add, but also a semi-review of what you get for your hard-earned bucks before you plunk them down for a lesser modem. I've also used Minimodem-C, and the sizes are the exact same, one difference being that the 1200 baud LED is now a 2400 baud LED. Those of you who use your Commodores to remotely login will find either modem to be a boon, supporting both Hayes & Commodore 1670 protocol and pretty cheap on your checkbook. Just my $0.02 worth.
