Help! My 1541 thinks there is a permanent write protect tab! I can read
files fine, but I cannot write anything to any disks, it gives me a 'write
protect' error. Does anyone know how to fix this? I think it is a software
problem turned hardware problem. I recently got the newest version of Kermit
from a friend, who neglected to inform me that the 'kermit-boot' file was
for C128's. So I loaded it and ran it. It gave a 'no block' error. THEN
I listed it and found it was for C128. Ever since that point I have been
unable to write with my disk drive. PLEASE HELP!
thanx in advance.

The likely reason that your 1541 can't write to a disk is because the the write protect sensor is covered with grunge. Use a good disk cleaner.

Open up the 1541 and clean the little LED that senses the write-protect notch (clean with alcohol or diskette cleaner). This is the most obvious hardware problem (also check the connecting wires for shorts). There also could be a problem with the drive ROMs, which someone with more expertise might be able to check. But check the obvious hardware problems first. Gregg W. A disk cleaner doesn't go near the write protect notch. The
cleaning must be done manually.
