(Here liney liney liney... Where is that line eater?!) I have need of a 1541 service-manual with schematic and test procedures. My problem is this: after the disk is on for a short while (~15 minutes) it locks up while loading a program. After the LOAD-command the system responds with its "Searching for" messages and then just sits there, with the drive still spinning. I've replaced the 12-volt regulator and the 74LS14 (hex-inverter) chip, with no luck. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike

I happen to have a repair manual sitting right in front of me. It was just returned by a friend. It is called "Commodore 1541 Troubleshooting & Repair Guide". It is written by Michael G. Peltier, and is published by SAMS. The book has schematics, flow charts, and lots of diagrams. It also has allignment procedures (with & without an o'scope). It also covers the old 1540 drives, as well as the 1542 drive (the 1541 with the "lever" door). Cost is $20.00 and can be found at B. Daltons. Good luck with getting it fixed!!!!! -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Lowrey "So it goes, so it goes, so it goes, so it goes. Hi, Anyone know where I can get a technical reference manual of schematic for the 1541 disk drive? We need to trouble shoot a problem and would like to have more information on the drive. The best 8-bit reference series I have found on the subject is the SAMS series. In general they are very complete. You should be able to pick one up at an electronics store somewhere in the Big Apple, or failing that you can call SAMS direct at 1-800-428-SAMS. (I THINK that's the number. You may get a doo-wee-dah. If so then ask a computer dealer for the number.) It will probably cost around $20. If you just want to align your 1541, there are some very good alignment checking and documentation files on how to do it yourself on Quantum Link. I have no affiliation with either Quantum Link or SAMS. Good luck... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Byrd ! byrd@husc7.harvard.edu ! Tanya Katz (tanya@adds.newyork.NCR.COM) asks: >Anyone know where I can get a technical reference manual >of schematic for the 1541 disk drive? I have seen a Howard W. Sams Computerfacts service manual for the 1541 in a couple of hi-tech book stores as well as in city public libraries around Silicon Valley. If you don't have similar luck locally, maybe a book store could order or a library could do an inter-library loan for you. A cursory look at the manual gave me the impression that it was pretty serious and thorough. Good luck. -- Mike Fischer H-P Stanford Park R&D Palo Alto, CA mikef%hpspd@hplabs.hp.com

Call them up for a catalog. Sincerely, Scott K. Stephen

Give Commodore USA a call. I bought the schematics to the C128 and 1571 drive from Commodore Canada. Alex Burger - Commodore Chairman of CRS (416-629-0128) --- * Via ProDoor 3.1R
