You DON'T want a 1670 modem. Get a good Hayes compat. modem and an interface to connect it to your Commodore. I recommend the Deluxe RS-232 Interface from Omnitronix. They're located in Seattle.

Going this route will save you alot of frustration.

Why all the abuse on the 1670? I have one, and it's never given me any
problem.

Exactly... the 1670 is a wonderful modem.. it is very easy to use, needs no
cables of any sort, and is very easy to program as well... A hayes would
be better, as it can be connected to any computer, but the 1670 is
definately a fine modem, and at around $40 in Nova Scotia, it is a very
good deal...

the 1670 is a versatile modem but comes in 2 versions. The new one, if
memory serves me right, has 4 dip switches; the old one has 3. that 4th
switch allows the user to turn of the auto answer mode. I have one of each
and leave the 3 dip unplugged so that callers don't get screeched at.
For my purposes (simple bbs & unix computer calling), it is adequately
hayes compatable. If you buy, watch for the money back option...
