[comp.sys.cbm] Memory expansion

EAO102@psuvm.psu.edu (Ernie Oporto) (12/05/90)

Does anyone have any opinions on what would be better for me:
          1) A GEORAM MEU ($124.95)
          2) A 1750 clone which is actually an upgraded 1764 ($199.95)
(upgraded to 512K like the geoRAM)

If anyone has comments on these or even has one to sell used for a cheaper
 price please e-mail me.

If you have a 128, go for the 1750 clone definitely. GEORAM works
only with GEOS; the 1750 is a standard 128 device, and can be used
with DMA's etc.

If you have a 64, perhaps the GEORAM would be a better value for the
money, as the ram expansion is not so simple to access there anyway.

That depends on what you want to use the RAM for. If you buy GeoRAM,
the ONLY program that will utilize the extra memory is GEOS. At this
time, I know of no other program to take advantage of the RAM.

However, the 1750 is a standard RAM device that works on the 64 or 128
(not just the 128 as posted previously). For the C64 you will have to
buy a beefed-up power supply ($30-$40). The GeoRAM requires no such
extra power supply.

Many software programs can take advantage of the 1750, including games,
productivity software, and others. And of course, GEOS will use the
extra RAM, just like GeoRAM, but the 1750 will cause GEOS to increase in
speed in many cases.

By far the better buy is the 1750. The only question is, can you afford
it, and do you plan to use your RAM only for GEOS? If the answers are
"no" and "yes," then the GeoRAM is a good idea.

Actually, the C64 is quite capable of accessing the 1764 (expanded or
not). There are however other issues to consider. For instance,
there's a guy out there working on a battery backup for GEORAM with a
clock. If you'll eventually want that sort of thing, you should probably
get a GEORAM.

Oops. I realize that this is wrong (as a few have pointed out), and don't
know what I was thinking when I wrote it. I hereby accept any public
humiliation I am due.

The 1750 clone is *WELL* worth the extra $$$ unless all you want it
for is GEOS. The GEORam works *ONLY* with GEOS. Why? Because the REC
that C= uses in the 1700/1750/1764 is patented and only they can use it.

So, don't blame Berkeley Softworks (who don't care anymore, anyway since
they are now GeoWorks doing the same thing for IBM PC/XTs that they did
for the C64/128)... And very well I might add...

In my humble opinion, even though the GEORAM is the cheapest one, the REU is
a better choice, it can be used by any software and can programmed very easily,
whereas the GEORAM, from what I've read, can only be used by GEOS. Also, it
seems that the GEORAM is somewhat slower than a true REU. I know the REU is
capable of doing DMA's at 1 Mb per seconds! That's very fast... Besides,
if you have a C64, the boosted power supply is another bonus.

One point in favor of the GEORAM: Because its design is different from the
17XX and clones, it allows simultaneous use with the 4Mhz accelerator cartrige.

(Of course, you've got to use one of those expansion port 'expanders' that
allow more than one cartrige in the system at once.)

I don't use GEOS (I bought an Amiga instead :-) and I was happy with my 1750 I
bought way back when. (At least until I started playing with my 1 meg Amiga :)
I heard this from two different die-hard accelerator users that I tried to
sell my 1750 to.
