[comp.sys.cbm] REAL Commodore Hardware

stigall@silver.ucs.indiana.edu (john stigall) (12/15/90)

Speaking of strange Commodore hardware, a friend of mine just saw the
strangest yet (unless you have seen a Commodore stereo) which is the
Commodore filing cabinet, complete with the chickenhead. The friend is
a reputable source, so I don't think I have to cross post to
alt.folklore.computers. :) I guess Commodore made a real variety of
stuff in the early days before they made computers.

(BTW - I have had trouble replying to the person willing to sell me a
Commodore calculator @ncmicro.lonestar.org - our mailer rejects this
address...any ideas?)

Early days? Commodore still makes filing cabinets! (I don't know about
the chickenheads though... I've never seen one of those.)

Commodore made office furniture at the same time they made computers. Remember
that the PET and its disk drives had a metal case. The same factory was used to
make desks, file cabinets, shelves, computer tables etc... This was all done
up in Canada.

Did Commodore ever make armored trucks? Those 8250's and similar dual
disk drives were built like them! :-) I didn't believe a friend who told
me that they were so heavy-duty until I saw one. Those 8250's were great
though... 2 megs, never got hot like my SFD or 1541's did.

As far as I know, their office furniture business was spun off; the old
Commodore plant on Pharmacy Avenue in Toronto bears the "Commander" name and
Commodore moved a block or so down the road.
