[comp.sys.cbm] REU upgrade success

XWUU@PURCCVM.BITNET (01/05/91)

I just finished upgrading my 1764 REU to 512K and wanted to express my thanks
to all in this group for your help and support. I picked up the 8, 1 X 256K
(150 ns) DRAM chips from my local Commodore shop for about $2 each. They
are getting harder to locate, so if you are looking to make the upgrade, get

these slow little puppies soon.

The job took me about 90 minutes total - including a 15 minute jaunt to the
corner hardware store for a number 60 drill bit (tiny).

I chose to drill out the pre-soldered holes in the circuit board with an
undersized drill bit in a pin vise. I used a number 60 drill, but would use
a number 62 next time. Cost approx 60 cents (US). Drilling left a neat,
clean hole without adding heat to the board as de-soldering would have.

If you are new to this stuff as I am and have read or are about to read
the files on how to do these conversions, take heart - it's easy...and cheap!
after each
The only addition that I would make to the existing instructions would be to
include the DRAM speed of 150 nanoseconds to all parts lists and references.

Thanks bunches again to those of you who offered suggestions and support!
