I have a c64 with the following I/O devices attached. A 1541-II disk drive, a vic-modem, a joystick and a t.v. Today, out of the blue the c64 started printing characters to the screen at its own discression. They only appear when in using the on screen editor, not when a program is running. The charaters that are printed are 2, 8, 6, 4, -, (, <home>, <backspace>, and a few others. I know for sure that they are printed, not simply pushed into screen memory, because it has moved whole lines as if you are editing a program line in the middle of some other. It has also done this while in quote mode where the symbols for <home> and <backspace> were printed instead of just the actions. I know that an I/O device not attached correctly can often make the c64 behave oddly, so I have experimented with various configuarations, i.e. nothing attached, disk drive only... This darn problem however only comes around at its leisure and I have no clear conclusions as to what its cause may be. My personal oppinion is the disk drive is causing it but I certainly hope not. The c64 is close to being disposable but the drive cost too much for that. My question is this. Does anybody have any ideas as to whats going on. Has it happend to anyone else. Do you know how to fix it. Should I chuck the whole mess into the weekly garbage. HELP! Respond through the net or by e-mail if you have any ideas. Thank in advance.
