[comp.sys.cbm] anyone want my text view program?

zerkle@iris.ucdavis.edu (Dan Zerkle) (03/03/91)

A couple years ago, as an excersize in assembly language programming,
I wrote a text file viewer for the the C-128.

It would load files into memory, so you could scroll back an forth one
line or one screenful at a time. It would automatically word wrap,
print the directory, and dump the file from the present line to the
end on the printer. Since it was machine language, the program was
decently fast, and you didn't need any other utilities. It would work
on any window size, and with 40 or 80 columns.

However, I never put any online help in, and there were two bugs which
I never could fix (I forget....something to do with switching input
channels and getting input from the wrong one. The other had
something to do with switching screen sizes). Because of this, I
never released the thing to the general public.

One thing led to another, and I never actually finished the project.
It was written with the Merlin 128 assembler (a very nice piece of
work, BTW). Would anybody like to take over the project? The reason
I wrote this was because none of the file viewers for the C64 were
anything to cheer about. They didn't have scrollback, and the screen
was only 40 columns.

Well, I've moved on to computers that are easier to program (I'm now a
computer science grad student, and I can use the muscle). I gave the
C-128 to my kid brothers, and they use it for games, mostly. I'm not
going to finish the project.

However, I probably still have the source for the "Mscroll" program
available, somewhere around here. Would anybody like to take over the
job? I can sell you the assembler, if need be. I'd like to see
people use my work.
