[comp.sys.cbm] Wizard 128 Troubles

A1.RJS@isumvs.iastate.edu (Ricardo Salvador) (04/15/91)

Folks,

I need some comments or suggestions regarding my difficulties in
downloading Wizard128 from GEnie. I'm an experienced
telecommunicator, and have never had the difficulties I've had
trying to get this program and using it.

GEnie now has it as a part of their StarShip menu that you can
download Wizard. I have read the help files and followed
instructions and still bomb out. Here's what I do. I format two
disks on a 1571 (JiffyDOS 5 ROMs), I log on to GEnie, I download the
.SFX file to one of the floppies. I disconnect. I cold boot my
machine (a C128 with JiffyDOS 5 and 64 Kb video RAM), DLOAD the .SFX
file, RUN it, watch the dissolve take place. Cold boot again, DLOAD
and RUN Wizard and watch it bomb. The error usually occurs in one
of two places: 1) either it aborts when dissolving one of the last
two files (MAKEMENU and FKEYS, I believe) and reports a missing
file, or 2) everything seems to dissolve fine, but on RUNning it
simply locks up the machine. Listing the loader program (WIZARD, 4
CMB blocks) puts of gibberish. In the same sessions I download
other stuff (I use XMODEM CRC) and the other stuff always works fine
the first time, for instance yesterday I got Starfighter 128, what a
dud!). I've successfully downloaded the C64 version of Wizard, but
that does me no good. Seeing how it works I want the same
functionality in 80 columns. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I
should mention I also have a 1581, and have tried the above
operations on it with the same results.

I got the following from GEnie's CBM FlagShip Sysop:
----------------------------------------------------

We have found that a few people have trouble using Jiffy in either a
terminal program or de-SFXing Wizard. We have not found the reason
for this.

Ricardo should toggle Jiffy off, use Wizard 64 to download the 128 version,
then un-SFX it again, without Jiffy.

Results should be near perfect.

One sure way of doing this is if Ricardo sends GEmail to the FlagShip$
mail address through the FlagShip 625 Menu, we will mail him a Wizard
128 disk at no charge. He should include a current mailing address
and allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Thanks Howard! Will do what FlagShip Sysop recommended. I
appreciate your help.
