[comp.sys.cbm] editor and more

jsc@minstrel.MIT.EDU (Jin S Choi) (04/26/91)

1) Does anyone know of a good C editor for the 128? I don't need a compiler, just
an editor.

2) I was just poking around milton and found the UNIX-128 files. Just how good
is this? I can't imagine it being a full implementation, but even a reasonable
facsimile would be nice. I see it has a tiny version of Emacs. Wow, that'd be
great if it worked well. Unfortunately, I won't be able to use any of this for
another month as I'm still in school and my computer's at home.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's terrible, don't bother with it- the emacs implementation is slow, buggy
and accepts only 8K of program space. I'm going to have Scott Stephen
remove it real soon.... (I wrote it, so I should know).

I've finished a complete rewrite of all the code, with the exception of one
nasty VT100 bug in the telecommunications software. Emacs 2.00 will
accept up to 700 lines of code now, and is (relatively) bug-free. I've
given out some pre-release copies, and I'm hearing good things (no bug
reports yet...).

No, it's not a full implementation (in 128K...?), but does support about 120
of the more popular commands. It has an assembler, spreadsheet, emacs-style
editor, telecommunications software, a few games... enough to keep busy with.

I'll send it to milton as soon as I can figure out why VT100 works uncompiled,
but dies when compiled :(.

If you run under CP/M, VDE2.66 is a great editor. There is a version
(VDE-C128) which has been tailored to run on the 128.

Where can I get it? Anywhere ftp'able?

There's also ZDE 1.3, which is an update to VDE. Although it includes
new features when used with Z3PLUS, it also works great with plain old
CP/M. ZDE 1.3 fixes some bugs in the older VDE, and it's also
somewhat faster on screen updates. This is one of the best public
doman editors available for ANY computer.

You used to be able to find this in the archive at

wuarchive.wustl.edu

in the directory mirrors/cpm/c128. (The file was, I believe, VDE-C128.ARK).
A few weeks ago, the disk on which the mirrors directory was stored had died,
and I haven't tried to connect to this since then. Another archive chock full
of CP/M stuff, apparently, is wsmr-simtel20.army.mil (did I get that right?),
but I myself have yet to succesfully connect to this one.
