[comp.sys.cbm] Commodore

Hello, It seems that the commodore computer is of a dieing breed, the
mad rush for commodore 64's has ended, and the Amiga is now 'in'.
but, im just curious. if there is ANY interest in the 64, anymore,
 does anyone out there care??

 just a wondering...

Your original posting sounds as ridiculous as the above translation of
it. The Commodore 8 bit machines aren't a "dying breed" until people
stop using them. There are people here that know a great deal about
the 64 - often a great deal more than the equivalent IBM user.

Some people use the 64 for experimentation. The 64 is ideal.... it is
a powerful, easily expandable machine that isn't very costly. Lately,
we've seen plans for a MIDI interface, and there has been discussion
about many other possible hardware modifications. I myself have made
numerous modifications to my machines.... things I would not dare
attempt on a much more expensive Clone.

That doesn't sound like a "dying machine."

I use one of my machines to run a BBS. It's a nice BBS. As a matter
of fact, some IBM BBS SysOps have been quite suprised at some of the
features. Granted, the IBM system may be faster - but I don't have
the advantage of a hard drive.

I've made my machine do things that IBM SysOps would like to see on
their machines, and leave some other 64 SysOps in awe. That's the
truth. And for every "neat" thing I've done with it on my BBS, I know
hackers that have done equally impressive feats with robotics,
terminal programs, Kernal reprogramming, and various hardware
modifications. With all the things I see being done with the
Commodore 8 bit machines, I can hardly agree with your idea that these
machines are a "dying breed."

You could use 1581 and burst-load...! I do! My BBS is quite fast, even
though it is only partly MC (It is much faster and easier to
change Basic-part..) My system is fairly good , I can mail you a demo,
if you want to see it.. You could show me yours..

Well, as we say here: If you can't do your software, you aren't
                      ready to be Sysops.. :-)

I avoid serial, and I'm on a 64 so burst mode is less than ideal. The
system runs on IEEE based equipment.

Actually, if I were to patch up the IEEE drivers to work with serial,
the system would work quite nicely with a 1581.

Well, I've done more than one BBS. This is actually the third
ground-up rewrite.... ;-)

I use c64 too.. so it is no excuse not to use burst... the program is 1.5
pages and need only two wires.. So, it don't help much with short
files, but anyway, you can't anymore see message length from load-time..

Actually, I have no worthwhile serial drives with burst (such as a 1581).
However, if it is a public-domain type thing, I certainly would not mind
having a copy on hand for possible future use.

The most serious problem is that the BBS IEEE drivers overrun the serial
drivers. If this wasn't the case, I'd probably have at least a 1541 online
for some misc. storage space.

This vic-box is v.21/22 and soon 24H.. so.. and it soon has
256kB of battery-backed-up Ram-disk..

Sorry if there is many spelling mistakes..
