Do you mean you want to BOOTLEG a copy of somebody else's software? Or do
you want to know about the lowest-cost way of getting it legally?

Ask your DEC salesperson about 'license to copy' which is the cheapest
correct way to do this.

Correct me if I am wrong, (won't be the first time) but I am under the
impression that RT-11 version 2 and older (they are on at least version 5
now) is in the public domain. Of course version 2 is a bit primitive
compared to version 3 on up, as it does not have the friendly DCL-like command
line interpreter, .com files, etc etc. but is certainly still useful for
"real-time" duties.

Anybody have some facts on this?

You need to order two things. First, the license:

QY013-UZ	RT-11 Class L license with warranty	$500.00

then, you need to order binaries and documentation. The order number
depends on what kind of media you want:

QJ013-H3	RT-11 on RX50 diskettes + doc $750.00
QJ013-H5	RT-11 on TK50 tape cartridge + doc	$900.00
QJ013-HD	RT-11 on 9-track 800bpi magtape + doc	$900.00
QJ013-HH	RT-11 on RL02 cartridge disks + doc	$1100.00
QJ013-HM	RT-11 on 9-track 1600bpi magtape + doc	$900.00
QJ013-HQ	RT-11 on RL01 cartridge disks + doc	$1100.00
QJ013-HX	RT-11 on RX02 diskettes + doc $900.00
QJ013-HY	RT-11 on RX01 diskettes + doc $900.00

If you work at a company that already has RT-11 licensed to another
computer, you may copy theirs, but you need to buy the right-to-copy
license. You will probably want to get your own copy of the documentation,
too:

QJ013-HZ	RT-11 RTC license, no media or doc	$315.00
QJ013-GZ	RT-11 documentation only $545.00

Those last two items come to $860 -- unfortunately, you only save
$40 by doing the copying yourself. Beware, though: a local user
bought the right-to-copy license, then found that no one had a
version newer than 5.2 (current version is 5.4) and it did not
support his TK50 tape drive.

All of the above items may be ordered through DECDirect, 800-258-1710,
or through Digital's Electronic Store, (800-DEC-DEMO, 1200/2400bps,
VT100/200 required) if you have an account there.

Good luck,
