TWENTIETH ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM
The Symposium Planning Committee for DECUS invite you to attend the
Twentieth DECUS South Pacific Chapter Symposium, to be held at the
National Convention Centre in Canberra, ACT, Australia from 20 to 24
August 1990. Also there are Pre Symposium Seminars on the preceding
Sunday and a Management Forum on the preceding Saturday.
There are currently more than 245 sessions scheduled occupying more
than 210 hours in the Symposium. Topics cover the broad spectrum of
Digital hardware and software with over 30 speakers from overseas
Digital groups.
The topics for the Pre Symposium Seminars are:
- User Centred Design Factors in Computer Support Materials
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
- VMS to IP Connectivity
- Professional VAX/VMS System Management
- To Catch a Thief: Discovery, Investigation and Prosecution of
Computer Criminals
- DECnet/VAX Security
- Network Troubleshooting
- Introduction to DECnet OSI Phase V
- RMS Tuning
- Designing Relational Databases
- Object Oriented Design and Programming
The theme for the Management Forum, which is pitched at CEO and Senior
MIS Management level, is "Towards the Third Millenium" and will address
issues facing businesses over the next ten years in three key areas:
- international economic scene
- changing management style
- advancements in technology
Digital will be holding its largest ever exhibition - 2,400 sq m - in
conjunction with the Symposium and open to delegates from the Sunday.
(It opens on the Wednesday for the Canberra business community as well.)
A cluster of three VAX 6400s will power the exhibition network (FEDnet)
with a full set of VMS V5 products installed. Every Symposium delegate
will have an ULTRIX, a VMS and a VAXnotes account on FEDnet and visiting
US and Australian "gurus" will answer questions in the VAXnotes files.
There will be theatrettes showing latest products and more than 50 third
party exhibitors will be showing their products. The exhibition is
designed for "hands on" participation and there will be more than 100
terminals and workstations scattered round the exhibition area and
available for delegates.
Costs for the Symposium are $530 (full registration - covers breakfasts,
lunches, M & A Teas on each Symposium day, i.e. not Wednesday, and two
dinners, copy of Proceedings), $200 for a Seminar, $450 for the
Management Forum. 2-day, 1-day and student regos also available.

NOTE: There will also be a DEXPO style exhibition from Tuesday 21 to
Thursday 23 August 1990 in the Lakeside Hotel in Canberra - a short
walk from the Convention Centre - organised by ON$DECK magazine.
