I would like to create my own font, and I have tried using ResEdit 1.0 to both edit an existing font and to create a new font, and a program called Font Editor v2.0 (No about box or other identification, seems kind of buggy - could be that I just don't know what I am doing - it does not seem to have the ability to create a font file) I have had very little luck (I read somewhere that ResEdit's font editor may itself be buggy - this seems true as I was able to introduce a horrible, recurring crash by mucking about in a stand alone font file (not the system file). Any pointers to hopefully PD tools which aid in font creation would be appreciated, along with any tips for using the tools I mentioned. Font Editor is indeed buggy. It *is* possible to create fonts with it, if you have a lot of patience (and the wisdom to do a "Save" often). There is a document called "Font Editor Tutorial" which goes into some detail about the vagaries of this program; check with your friendly neighborhood users' group. However, if you have any kind of serious interest in font creation, I suggest you look into Fontastic (published by Altsys). It is not public domain, but it is quite cheap (about $40, I think...probably can be had for less if you go to a discount mail-order place). It is considerably easier to use than the PD Font Editor, and is reputedly reasonably bugless. (#include standard disclaimer: I have no business relationship with this company (or anyone else, at the moment, more's the pity...)) Regarding the specific problem of the files created by Font Editor: FE creates a file which is in the proper format to be read by Font Mover or Font/DA Mover, but it does not give it the proper values in the Type and Creator fields. You will need to use SetFile, fEdit, or some other utility to change these fields to type: FFIL creator (for Font Mover): FMOV creator (for Font/DA Mover): DMOV Once this is done, you may move the font around in the normal way, or open it with Font Editor (yes, folks, this program won't even open files it's *created* until they're diddled!) -- jeanne a. e. devoto | "The mind is an infinite resource...but ...!tektronix!reed!jeanne | only if you don't squander it." Though not PD, a $50 (less at discount) program that works well for screen fonts is FONTastic, by Altsys Corp., Plano Texas. Be careful never to edit files directly in the System file, or even to use FONTastic to move fonts into there - use the Apple Font/DA Mover for that. -Brian Diehm Tektronix, Inc. Ike: Just Plano whores!

FONTastic by Altsys is inexpensive (about $40 if you shop around) and works quite nicely - at least I've been pleased with it. Lots of value for the money, and not copy protected.
