[comp.sys.mac] Jasmine SCSI experience

geoffb@nrcvax.UUCP (G. Geoffrey Baehr) (11/20/86)

A quick review of the Jasmine SCSI drive :

Target system was a 512k Mac with 128k ROM's . As I did not have a SCSI port,
that was ordered from Jasmine along with the drive. (~$90.00).

After waiting about three weeks for the drive to be delivered, I called and
was told that there was a queue for delivery, no problem, as I can endure a
wait for a decent piece of hardware. Lo and behold the drive arrived the next
day via Purolator Courier, I guess that enquiring helped "nice" the delivery
queue.

SCSI port installed in 10 minutes, easy clip on installation, clear
documentation.

Speed - no hard timimg, but appears faster than Dataframe (should be). Drive
is seagate 225. Drive defect list supplied w/drive. Cooling fan in drive
cabinet is less noisy than the drive, the drive makes the usual Seagate
chirp when seeking. Cabinet has 2 AC switched receptacles, also
protected by the same MOV's as the input AC mains have. RF/EMI filter
on AC line appears to be a pi filter.

Operation - system code supplied on floppy in case of crash, includes
format, mount, etc.. Also supplied are ~ 14 mbytes of public domain code.
Believe me, every "Freeware" program you have ever heard of is included,
such as latest Red Ryder, BinHex, UW, etc. Progs are separated into
many categories, such as Utils, Games, Programming, Graphics ...
No strange crashes encountered (3 weeks of operation), the usual caveats
about too many DA's apply. Times ? 2.5 sec to open MS Word. Compile
demo prog using Consulair C - about 20 sec.

Conclusion - The people at Jasmine are reputable, responsive vendors. I am
very favorably impressed with the drive (hooray for Seagate!) and its
operation, not to mention the free code. Best part was saving over $200.00
from other vendor's prices !

Regards to all,
GB
