I am thinking about getting a hard disk for my mac. I currently have a 128K machine (downgraded from my 512, but that's another story) so I also plan on getting some sort of upgrade. I have two questions: The first is: if you have a cheap (cost < $800) hard drive, then a. What kind is it, where did you get it, how much did it cost, etc.? b. How has it served you? The second question concerns upgrades. There seem to be three options. If you have used one of them (or have another option!) I'd like to hear about how much it cost and how well it works. Here are the options: The first is to upgrade to a MAC+. This is simple and sure to work. It would also let me use a SCSI drive, however it is a bit expensive and only includes 1 megabyte of memory. The second option is to get a third party memory upgrade and Apple's drive/ROM upgrade. I would then have to use a serial port based disk. I wonder whether a 2mb machine (with a correspondingly large disk cache) running over the serial port wouldn't be as fast or faster than a 1mb machine using a SCSI drive. The third option is to get a third party memory + SCSI upgrade and the Apple drive/ROM upgrade. A final option is to wait till January 20 and see what there is to see. New products are often acompanied by price cuts. Please send replies to me directly at {seismo, allegra}!rochester!mayer. I will post a summary to the net if I get enough replies. -- Jim -- -- Jim Mayer Computer Science Department (arpa) mayer@Rochester.EDU University of Rochester (uucp) rochester!mayer Rochester, New York 14627
