Hi. We're using PageMaker (version 1.2) on a Macintosh 128K upgraded to 512K with the olde 64K ROMs to do a weekly newspaper at our high school. The newspaper comes out great for the most part, only PageMaker crashes often and hard in various situations. Sometimes editing text will cause an "Aldus" error, usually numbered -1326 or something, which after a while will freeze up the machine. Sometimes we are unable to save with a similar error. Sometimes the machine just freezes up. Sometimes we get a standard Macintosh crash 'n' reboot. This happens most often in PageMaker, but once in a blue moon MacWrite bombs too. We have two 400K disk drives, which we keep clean. We back up our files all over the place, but it is especially time consuming with the combination of a 512K machine, 400K disks which themselves get messed up, huge PageMaker project and temp files... you get the idea - rebooting ain't fun. Our Macintosh Plus with an HD20 was just rejected from the school budget for next year, and we may well be stuck with this dinosaur. The chances of getting 128K ROMs and/or 800K drives is fairly slim. What to do? If you have any suggestions or ideas, or rumors about PageMaker 2.0, I'd be pleased as punch to hear from you. Aldus says Aldus error 1326 can be avoided by replacing your system file every few months with a fresh copy. Why? some kind of text error arises which starts up the Apple Resource Manager, which has a bug. They also told me (today, phone support) to use the "Shortcuts" (key commands) in every possible case and to seriously avoid moving text around by click- and-drag mousing. When error 1332, 1328, 1326 et al. arise, they suggest NOT DELETING the offending text; but rather to try to click the mouse fifteen or twenty times until the error box clears(maybe) and if it does, drag the offending text off the pasteboard and just ignore it. They say also you may cut your text out, into scrapbook, then close your file and' open a new file and paste it in as a halfway fix (but your new pages will not be connected). I'm using P-Maker 1.2 on a 512K fat old mac, 400K internal, 800 external.
