[comp.sys.mac] Genealogy programs for the Macintosh

blob@bnrmtv.UUCP (01/23/87)

23 January 1987
As far as I can determine, there are now, or soon will be,
approximately 4 1/2 genealogy programs for the Macintosh. The list
is:

1) Family Heritage File	($149)
   StarCom Software
   Windsor Park East
   25 West 1480 North
   Orem, UT 84507
   (801) 225-1480
This program has actually been shipping for several months. It is a
straight port of Personal Ancestral File 1.0, which is a BASIC
program written for the IBM PC by the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints. (Mormons). It doesn't currently have a Mac-like
interface--It does have pull down menus, but you can't use the mouse
for editing, etc.

1.5) Omnis3 database template
   StarCom Software
   Windsor Park East
   25 West 1480 North
   Orem, UT 84507
   (801) 225-1480
This is a database template for the popular database program Omnis3.
The (second-hand) message I got indicated that the price was $495,
but I was uncertain if that included a copy of Omnis3 or not. Omnis3
retails for $495. This is listed in a catalog of add-on products for
Omnis3 published by Blyth Software, the creators of Omnis3.

2) Family Roots for the Mac ($50 initially)
   Quinsept, Inc.
   P.O. Box 216
   Lexington, MA
   (617) 641-2390
This program should have started shipping this week. This program is
implemented using Aztec C. The initial version of the program lets
you enter data, and will print out blank forms in draft mode on an
Imagewriter. That's all. Quinsept plans a series of 7 updates to
the program which will provide ever-increasing functionality over the
upcoming year. The final price, after everything is implemented, is
$185, the same price as the other versions of Family Roots on other
computers.

3) Family Ties
   Computer Services
   1050 E. 800 South
   Provo, UT 84801
   (801) 377-2100
This program is another port of an existing MS-DOS program. It has
no Mac-like interface. This program is still in beta, and I haven't
been able to get hold of the author recently. Status unknown. This
will be shareware, when available.

4) MacGene ($145)
   Applied Ideas, Inc.
   PO Box 3225
   Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
   (213) 546-6461
This company has an ad in the November and December 1986 and January
1987 MacWorld magazine. The program offers Descendant, Pedigree,
Family Group, Birthday, and Surname reports. The current version is
written in NEON and will print only to the Imagewriter or Imagewriter
II. The program has 9 user-defined fields as well as all the
standard LDS data. Contains inport/export procedures for easy
transfer of data from Microsoft File, etc. This program has been
shipping quietly for several months. New version available soon.

for the Mac, please let me know.
