ReSent-To:nntp-xmit#@andrew.cmu.edu Return-path: <km38#@andrew.cmu.edu> To: outnews#ext.nn.comp.sys.mac@andrew.cmu.edu Here are a number of rumors (facts?) about Apple's new workstation (extracted from "The Tartan", Carnegie Mellon University, January 20th, 1987): A new workstation from a leading computer company may provide serious competition for existing workstations. Cloaked in secrecy and not due for public release for at least 2 more months, the workstation codenamed Paris is already raising eyebrows with rumors of its specifications. Sources within the computing community allege the Paris to be more advanced than existing machines largely because it has "some amazing amount of memory". (sic) Claiming that he first heard about the Paris "in the Silicon Valley" and later saw a pre-release listing of specifications, one source told The Tartan "It's gonna bury the RT" [IBM RT, widely available on campus at CMU]. The Paris is rumored to be an open architecture machine with 12 slots, allowing the user to change cards at will. Other speculations include a Motorola 68020 16 Mhz processor, a hard-capacity internal hard drive, and optional color. Memory allegedly includes 1 megabyte display, 2 to 4 megabytes RAM, and a 20 megabyte disk drive. Comparatively, a Paris would operate about 10 times faster than a Macintosh Plus and have screen resolution 4 times greater, yet still be "relatively small, for a workstation." Cost to the public will be around $7000, but one source claims that [...] students will be able to purchase a Paris [...] for a figure closer to $3500. Rumor also has it that the only Paris in existence is on the CMU campus. No report have confirmed this yet. *Please be aware that most of the information contained in this article came from unattributable sources and that no official information has been released from either the company or the CMU Administration.* [end of article] Left to your appreciation.
