Thinking I knew all about those resources, and boasting to some friends how easy it is to customize Macintosh applications, I was convinced by a left handed friend that changing the pencil tool in MacPaint to one that points to the left would be a good idea. So I open up MacPaint with ResEdit, and, what do you know but the pencil doesn't seem to be anywhere! I thought it would be a cursor, but no.... Now there is this font called ".12" or something (this is MacPaint 1.5), however, whenever I try to open this with ResEdit 1.0d12 (I think), ResEdit crashes. Furthermore this font can't be copied with the Font/DA Mover (3.2 I think). So what gives? Does the pencil tool live in this font? How can I edit it?? Another question: is the Arrow cursor built into the ROM? How would one go about customizing it? Are there any other frustrated lefty's out there? Jim Meiss jdm@ut-ngp

You might try ResEdit 1.1D- (that's "one-point-one-almost-D"), which seems to have better font editing than 1.0Dxx, 1.0, or 1.01. > Another question: is the Arrow cursor built into the ROM? Yes. > How would one go about customizing it? Inside Mac, volume IV, chapter 3 (The Resource Manager) has a section titled "Overriding ROM Resources." It says: "You can override some of the ROM resources, such as 'CURS' resources, simply by putting the substitute resource in you application's resource fork." > Are there any other frustrated lefty's out there? Not me!

An interesting historical note is that about 5 members of the original Macintosh design staff were left handed. I think 4 or 5 also had 'Jr.' in their names. --- Ronald H. Nicholson, Jr. ...hplabs!hpda!nicholso

The arrow cursor is accessed from a Quickdraw global variable and is initialized when you call InitGraf.
