IN OUR LAST EPISODE: We heard that there were two new Macs, the Aladdin and the Paris, 68020-based, with slots in the back. Aladdin looked a lot like the Mac+ (except with two drives) and would be out in January. Paris would be running the Mac Interface on top of Unix, would be a workstation, had seperate monitor (color option) and a bit blitter (which is what the Apple Cray was for). Eventually, it would allow a Mac Interface w/multi-tasking. Well, an anonymous friend got back from Cupertino, and the theme seems to be "Reality sets in", to wit: ------- The Aladdin has become the Mac SE. It will be out in March, and is already being produced. No 68020 -- a 68000. Speed switching between 8 and 16 MHz. ONE slot in back. Machine looks just like Mac+ but with 1 1/2" more at the top. Internal SCSI Hard Drive (I assume 20MB, but I didn't ask). Option of having 1.6 MB floppies. One floppy drive (but possible option of two). Upgradeable from Mac+ -- motherboard is almost identical. SCSI port in back may be different(?!). Released Mar. 2nd. Price (my informant didn't belive this): $2495. Also didn't believe Mac+ new price: $1295. ------- Paris has become the Mac II. Not much on this, but it will only be announced in March. Most of the features mentioned earlier are still intact (especially the 68020). The main question seems to be release date -- problems are reported with the Unix port and the bit blitter. Price: $3895 without a monitor. I wouldn't expect to see anything on this until September, but that's from sky-gazing. ------- Put that in your pipe and smoke it... "I've finally learned what `upward compatible' means. I've heard totally unconfirmed rumour that the the new bus, is a significantly modified Nu-bus. That it has SEVERE performance degredation compared to the original Nu-bus or the VMEbus (10 meg BIT / sec transfers vs 10 meg BYTE) Can anyone confirm? Bob Berger Datacube Inc.
