[comp.sys.mac] Hard Disk Controllers?

hamachi@turtlevax.UUCP (02/05/87)

After looking at February's MacTutor article, "Build Your Own SCSI Hard Disk",
I'm enthusiastic about trying it myself! Next month's issue describes the
software end of the project, but maybe someone can answer a few questions so
I can get started *NOW*.

What about driver/controller compatibility? If I build my own hard disk, will
my Mac with the standard system be able to talk to it? Or do I have to install
a special disk driver that talks to my brand of controller? (A friend has a
Western Digital controller that he'll sell me cheap).

If there are any compatibility problems, it might be best to use the same
controller that Apple uses in its SCSI drive, so does anyone know what kind
this is? Does Apple use an off-the-shelf controller, or do they have a custom
and proprietary design?

What about other hard disk manufacturers? Can someone with a Mac-compatible
SCSI drive open the box and tell me what's in there?
