A friend of mine recently bought an Mac+ which has some strange problems. The problem is that numbers are not often displayed correctly. For example, from time to time if he does an 'get info' from the finder some files would be have a display like: 'Imagewriter is 32?50 bytes accounts for 3?.1 K on disk'. Sometimes the character is ">" instead of "?". This problem does not occur on all files. At first, I thought that problem may be related to a corrupted font resource so I gave him my system, replaced fonts, etc, but the problem still persisted. Also, this problem doesn't just occur when the finder is trying to calculate disk space. For example, from time to time in the score in Dark Castle will be incorrectly displayed. When this happens he usually sees on of those undefined-character squares in a digit's place. Oh, he's experienced this problem from using the following systems: * unmodified finder 5.2/system 3.1.1 * unmodified finder 5.3/system 3.2 * finder 5.3/system 3.2 +/- some fonts * finder 5.3/system 3.2 +/- some fonts and some DA's * finder 5.3/system 3.2 +/- some fonts, DA's, + PD domain stuff from usenet I don't think the problem is in the parameter ram section either, it continues to occur after I reset his pram. Has anyone ever experienced any problems like this before? Any suggestions on what to do? If it happens with multiple System versions from multiple sources, then it may be in the ROM, though this seems unlikely. Open up the Mac and another Mac, swap ROMs (they're the two socketed chips on the motherboard - be careful with them, those pins do break), boot both machines, and do something that always creates the problem on both. If it is a ROM problem, re-swap the chips and take the machine to an Apple dealer to get a new set of ROMs while you're still under warranty. Otherwise, take it to the dealer anyway and hope he can find the problem. -- Tim Maroney, Electronic Village Idiot {ihnp4,sun,well,ptsfa,lll-crg,frog}!hoptoad!tim (uucp) hoptoad!tim@lll-crg (arpa) Second Coming Still Vaporware After 2,000 Years
