[comp.sys.mac] INFO NEEDED - Kinetics Fastpath Box

clubmac@runx.UUCP (02/11/87)

[ The following request for information is being posted on behalf of a
member of our club. ]

Here is CSIRO in Sydney we are proposing to test out a KENETICS Fastpath
box to connect an AppleTalk system through ethernet to a VAX system
running VMS.

I gather that both Kenetics and another third party developer (Alice)
provide software to support such protocol conversion however
information is sketchy in Australia about the abailities of
such an interconnect.

Could people with some experience with such systems give me some
ideas of its capabilities.

For example can the Kinetics system act as a proper file server able
to share VAX files with the Appletalk system or can one only up-load
and down-load files from the VAX system to AppleTalk.

Our decision to acquire the new AppleFile server/Spooler system using
a dedicated Mac will depend on the Kinetics system and its capabilities.

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP ANYONE CAN PROVIDE ON THIS QUESTION THAT
MUST BE OF INTEREST TO MANY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.

Many thanks.

We've been using the alisatalk system for about a week now and so
I can give some quick impressions.....

1. The march release version will support remote volumes on the VMS VAX with
read only volumes, password protected volumes, and seperate desktop
and temp files coded by user name (set with the chooser).

2. It will also support moving files to/from the regular vms file system
	without going through the mac.

3. It has full support for laserwriter spooling which is very fast and requires
no modifications to your system to use it. The spooler system is
	independent of the file server.

4. rumours of things to come:

	a. Full hfs/appleshare compatibility
	b. imagewriter II/appletalk spooler
	c. remote login to the vms host
	d. remote access through the host to decnet protocols...

5. bottom line: I love it.....it seems to be very reliable (much better than
the bernoulli box we were using as a file server)
