A couple of questions, some simple and some... (1) Are there prototyping cards available from Apple for the NuBus? (2) Are the 256k ROMS the same in the Mac SE and Mac II, and (of course) what are the new things in there? (looks like AppleTalk is one) (3) If the ROMS are the same (ie. the ROMs in the II are 2 bytes wide), does it slow the 68020? I actually suspect it wouldn't, but I'm curious what the real actual truth is. Mike p.s. I tried the machine yesterday and I really like it! And it's a Smalltalk machine that I could afford if I could afford anything but school. Speaking of Apple Smalltalk... -- Reed College -- Portland, Oregon -- 503/774-9192

In response to my own posting, let me answer some of my questions... Q: Prototyping cards for the NuBus? A: There should be some coming from Apple. Nothing formally announced yet. Q: Do MacII and SE ROMS have the same content? A: Yes, No, Maybe we'll learn some day Q: How wide is the ROM data bus on the Mac II? A: 4 bytes. I'm still curious if it would be as quick with 2 byte wide ROM. When I get some time I'll figure out if this might be so. Q: Apple Smalltalk for the Mac II? A: Version 0.4 should be coming from APDA. The Mac II is vaporware, and they will be fixing bugs in the ROM up until the very last minute. Besides, the Mac II has color stuff that the SE doesn't (although I'd sure like to see an official list of managers in the SE & II.) > > Q: Apple Smalltalk for the Mac II? > A: Version 0.4 should be coming from APDA. The Mac SE does not have Color Quickdraw and the Mac II ROMs take advantage of the new addressing modes of the 68020. I've been told no. I've also been told that Apple will implement the parts
applicable for the + in Ram, so we won't have to do without.

The Mac SE ROMs expect to have the Apple Desktop Bus interface to the keyboard and mouse, which the Mac Plus does not provide. Some of the other hardware might be different on a Mac SE as well. The Mac Plus does have the ability to support 256K of ROM; this is used, for example, to place the Kanji software in ROM for Japanese Macs.
