*** pac man eats lines *** Okay, I just got my first DELUGE of letters concerning how to get all of the goodies archived at SUMEX. Well, I'll tell you, step by step, how I go about it, okay? But be forewarned: This probably won't work for you, because it only started working here very recently. Fear not, though, for I will bring you BITNETters good news afterwards. 1: type FTP SUMEX-AIM 2: the FTP program (if it exists on your installation) will try to connect to sumex-aim 3: FTP will inform you when a successful connection has been made, and then prompt you for a login. 4: type ANONYMOUS 5: use your real userid for a password 6: type CD INFO-MAC 7: type GET 00DIR.VERBOSE (actually, I'm not too sure about the precise name, but if you've got some time you can issue the command LS to look at all of the several thousand files. My advice: don't issue LS without arguments.) 8: type QUIT to close the connection 9: peruse the 00dir at your leisure 10: repeat the steps to open the connection 11: issue the command GET <fileid> <localfileid> and enjoy! A few words of caution, tho': -some files are not in ASCII format. I haven't transferred them successfully yet. When I find out how to get them all the way down to my Mac, I'll let you know. -the whole thing here is really quirky. be patient and persistent -if you don't have FTP, I have no idea how to hook into it (sorry) (see below) FEAR NOT BITNETTERS!!! Our node (PUCC) has just started to run our very own MACSERVE!! (YAY!!) And unlike the MACSERVE at BITNIC, ours is up to date. If you're on BITNET, it just couldn't be easier. Alls you gotta do is TELL MACSERVE AT PUCC GET 00DIR VERBOSE. It will guide you through its operation. I've just started using it myself and will give you an update on it when I feel like it. I gotta go. Time is too too short. =====================gnirob===si===natas================================ mike schmelzer, freelance void puppy BITNET: 6089247@PUCC UUCP: ...ALLEGRA!PSUVAX1!PUCC.BITNET!6089247 "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make, minus medical expenses."
