Since I made my request for recovering an 800K HFS disk with trashed Master Dir Block I have gotten a few suggestions. The disk is completely readable (ie no bad media) but evidently the format of the block is bad. Most have either suggested using MacTools or Disk 1st Aid. I tried MacTools (V6.2) and all it did was wipe the directory and declare the disk empty. Big help. Disk 1st Aid (V1.0.1) Started to read the disk, and then said "Can't open the disk" or something similar. I checked the tech note called 'HFS Ruminations' but it was of little help. I could not bitcopy the disk, because Copy ][ gets its information on whether a disk is single or double sided from the Master Dir Block, and on the trashed disk, Copy ][ thought it was singled sided, so all the copies I made to work on were straight sector copies. I'm still looking for help, and would really like to know what is contained in the Master Directory - is it the top level dir, or just a special empty dir that points to the real top level? Try: 1) Formatting another disk as _MFS_, leaving it completely blank; 2) Copying just track 0, using Sector Copy in Copy II Mac, to (a copy of) your trashed disk; 3) Opening the disk under Fedit and using the Recover Deleted Files - on your disk the files that are there should 'look' like deleted files since the directory will now say that the disk is empty.
