[comp.sys.mac] Who is Cooke Publications?

jayr@well.UUCP (03/20/87)

Recently, someone posted a tip for a program called "MathWriter" by a
company called Cooke Publications in Ithaca, NY. I tried to call up
the company, but the Ithaca operator has no listing for such a
company. Does anyone have a phone number for these folks or a way
(other tham USMail) to reach them? Thanks.

MathWriter is written by Robert Cooke, who I believe teaches at
Cornell. Presumably you could call Ithaca, get Cornell's info #,
and then ask them for Cooke's office -- but many people are not
comfortable with doing business in this way, since they are on
University time & using University property. I'd just send USMail.
(ooh.....icky!)

MathWriter is being sold here through Baka Industries, (607)257-2070. I'm
sure they can answer any questions you have about it. The price was $50
back in November. I haven't seen it myself, but it's supposed to be a very
good.

In an earlier posting, I briefly described an equation processor in
response to questions concerning mathematical word processing. Here
is a more detailed description and some phone #'s for ordering.

Again, I have no financial or other connection with Cooke Publications.

MathWriter (tm) is an intelligent, WYSIWYG, full screen equation
editor as a 'stand-alone' application.
features include:
o multi levels of sub- super-scripting, including both vertically
   aligned.
o full control over size and placement of fraction bars, integration
   or summation limits.
o automatic stretching of parens, brakets, etc. to match their
contents. likewise for horizontal stretching of fractions to
match the numerator or denominator, whichever is larger.
o you can go back and edit any component at any time.
 o multi-line, multi-layers (as in fractions), matrices
o user selectable on-screen palettes to allow clicking on
symbols to enter them. palettes such as calculus, logic, etc.
o multi internal clipboard for saving repetitive parts of equations
o superposition of symbols to 'roll your own'

It is very mouse oriented (some may say too much so). For example, you
may click on the summation symbol, and the cursor is left at the bottom,
ready for the lower limit. Type it, hit enter, and the cursor jumps to
the top, for the upper limit. Enter again, and the cursor is now on the
main level. To go to superscript, you click on a 'northeast' pointing
arrow, and the cursor's there. That's the general idea. The only
complaints I have are very minor ones, such as the 'dot' cursor being
hard to see, and selection of upper level things can be awkward.
Files can hold several equations, one to a 'page', that you scroll through.
Export is through PICT's on the clipboard, so LaserWriter output is good.
All in all, a polished program. Works on Mac II, and a DA to convert
equations to TEX is in the works.

Price is $49.95 from Cooke Publications

I'll post a Macwrite file of sample equations soon.
