[comp.sys.mac] More word 3.0 bugs

chuq@plaid.UUCP (03/30/87)

I've discovered a number of new bugs in word 3.0, mostly involving headers
and footers. Lots of rough edges out there.

(1) I've gotten a ID=3 bomb a couple of times dealing with the special
first footer. I don't know exactly why, yet, and I can't reproduce
it exactly, but it invariably happens only when a first footer is
active and I've been working with it.

(2) Which is okay, I guess, because I've found that text put in the special
first footer won't be printed. At least, I can't get it to print,
even if the first footer is a duplicate of a normal footer. For
fun, put some text in the first footer, set up a single line border
above the paragraph, and watch the border line print without the
	text. neat!

(3) setting a line height of less than the point size of the font doesnt'
work. If, for instance, you have a blank line (just a paragraph
marker) in 10 point type, and you set the height to be 3 points, it
accepts it and gives you a 10 point line. If you want to do custom
leading, you need to reset the point size as well. foo.

Now, you might ask WHY anyone would want to do (3)? Because, if you start
working with paragraph borders, you'll find they are basically useless as
they are designed. Try putting some 10 point text with a double line above
it, followed by another paragraph of text with a single line above it:

	=====
	test
	------
	text

Print this out on the laserwriter, and notice how cramped everything is --
the text is basically unreadable. Now, try to adjust the leading with the
'space before' and 'space after' variables. Now, give up in disgust, add
blank lines around everything, attached the borders to those blank lines,
and adjust the height of the blank lines to set up your leading.

Whoever designed the borders must not have used them very much. There is no
flexibility in them and they don't react well to the text or the environment
around them. sigh......

However, I must say that it is fun being able to plug in PostScript wherever
I want.... Now, if I can only find lots of interesting PostScript samples
to play with....
