When I was at AppleWorld a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the new system
came with a totally rewritten ControlPanel (have any of you noticed the
cute graphics when you click on the version number...?). There was one
CDEV (ControlPanel module), called 'Sound' that allowed one to set the System
Beep to different types of sound (Monkey, Clapping, etc. don't remember
exactly -- it seemed like digitized sounds). Very nice. When I got my new
System a few days later, there was no such thing. Last week I got my new Mac SE
(great machine! Especially the internal SCSI is *very* fast) and unfortunately
there was again no such thing as a Sound CDEV. I could swear I did see it on
both the II and the SE at AppleWorld. Needless to say I loved it. I know there
are PD programs that allow you to do the same thing, but doesn't it make much
more sense to be able to set this from the ControlPanel?
If anyone knows more about this CDEV, please let me know -- I'd love to have
a copy of it.

The sound CDEV is only for the Sound Manager, ie the new hardware
sound in the Mac II.

The Sound cdev in the new Control Panel is only supported on the Macintosh
II, not the SE or the Plus. This is because the whole mechanism is based on
the new Sound Manager, which is only available on the Mac II. For now,
Plus and SE owners will have to continue to use the public domain hacks
that are currently available if they want to change their SysBeep sound.
