[comp.sys.mac] More Word 3.0 stuff

chuq@plaid.UUCP (04/01/87)

A couple of more Word 3.0 things.

first, an errata on a bug report. Thanks to a number of comments, I found a
pilot error in my side-by-side bug in the header. It turns out I hadn't
reset my margins so they didn't intersect. If you do it by the manual, it
seems to work fine (I claim the operation isn't intuitive, but what the
heck). What it doesn't answer is why what I did worked in a regular
document window (documented or not) and not in a header. Ah, the vagaries
of a complex computer program. Anyway, chalk one (well, one half) up to a
pilot error.

Second, a very perplexing question: my 'style' key (command-shift-S)
suddenly broke. I don't know why, and I can't unbreak it. If I type
command-shift-S to define a style, the page-number box flashes the word
'style' but then immediately drops back into input mode without allowing me
to enter a style name. If I keep the keys pressed, I get a repeating set of
's' characters in the page number box. I've removed the 'word settings
file' to see if maybe something in there was garbaged. I've even replaced
the binary from the distribution floppy, simply because I'm being paranoid.
It matters not if I'm working on an old document or start up a new one --
I'm suddenly unable to enter styles from the keyboard. Any suggestions on
how to un break this? Is this a known bug?

Gee, this is fun! I wonder what I'll break next! (For the record, for all
the problems I'm having, I would NOT consider going back to 1.05, if only
because 3.0 is MUCH faster, and there are lots of features I wouldn't live
without. It is a damn good WP. It just should be a lot better than it is.
Microsoft, if you need a Beta tester for 3.05, I'm sure I'll give it a
helluva workout.... (*grin*)

Found this one on my own. I rebooted my Mac, and the problem went away.
This implies that Word is doing something to either the system heap or a
variable in low memory (I'm guessing) that it shouldn't be, which is hosing
itself across incarnations of the program. Hmm... Perhaps it is mucking
with the keyboard definitions. I don't know, but I don't like programs that
stay broken after they quit, but magically fix themselves once you reboot
the machine...
