The current version of the Imagewriter driver queries the printer to find out whether the printer has its dip-switches set for hardware (DTR) handshaking, or data (^S,^Q (XON/XOFF)) handshaking. If the printer tells it it understands DTR handshaking that is what the mac trys to use, otherwise data handshaking is used. This means that Thunderscan users (Thunderscan sends the scan data on the DTR line) can set the DIP switches for Thunderscan, and leave them that way, the Imagewriter driver can still use the printer just fine. This means that if you are using an old parallel C. Itoh printer, hooked to a parallel to serial converter, then either the converter should support DTR handshaking and you should set the DIP switches to use it, or the converter should support data handshaking and you should set the printer dip switches to use _it_.
