I have an SE (which is nice) and the department here owns a laserwriter (which is nicer). Unfortunately, the laserwriter is connected to a mainframe and most folks generate postscript there with SCRIBE. I would like to use my mac to generate a postscript file, upload the file to the mainframe, and then print it. Sounds easy? "Just select the laserwriter as the output device, bring up the print menu, and type command-f." I am told. I am not connected to an appletalk network. Here lies the rub. When I try to choose the laserwriter, the chooser tells me that "the laserwriter requires appletalk, and the appletalk network is not active." When I click the radio button to make appletalk active, the *&%$ thing tells me that "The printer port is busy and appletalk cannot be made active now." The net result is that I cannot choose the laserwriter as the output device in order to get my postscript file. How can I convince it that I don't _care_ whether appletalk or a laserwriter is really there, and that all I want is a postscript file? I am running whatever versions of the finder, system, and chooser were recently shipped with the SE, so I should be current on these things. The problem occurs whether or not my imagewriter is plugged into the printer port. Do I need an older version of the chooser (the one giving me fits is 3.0)? Other folks here have said they do not have this problem. Does my mac hate me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Chuck Huff
