Well, I installed System 4.1, Finder 5.5 and found some major (internal) changes from 4.0 causing MAJOR external crashes. Here they go: 1) The system heap of 10000H or 65k is marginally large enough. Adding 1 or 2 DA's to the files caused many unexplained crashes, even on my 2 meg Mac+. I upped it to 20000H or 128K, and THOSE problems went away. 2) ALL my INTERNAL SYSTEM INITS crash on startup with errors. The startup screen displays, but a bomb box comes up before the Finder screen. I tested: a) HG-ALERT - Changes sysalert bomb box to have a FINDER button. It worked with System 4.0, except on SHUTDOWN from Finder, it said a System error occurred (ID=42) instead of the msg: "You may now power down your Mac safely". On Sys 4.1, it bombs on bootup with ID=10 error. b) MENUTIME init - Not Jclock! It just puts a clock in the menu bar. It bombs on bootup with ID=10 or ID=3 errors. c) OPENPATCH init- I never expected an Andy Hertzfield INIT to bomb! This caused the system to search ALL folders for an applic to run when a documents was double-clicked. It bombs with ID=03. 3) FWB software INIT file 'Automounter', that automounts FWB HD Partition subvolumes on my Jasmine 80 meg, either doesn't do anything or tries to put up some alert and the system hangs with the alert box flickering on top of my startup screen. 4) And, the biggest of all. PC MACKEY, the AT keyboard for Mac is HARDWARE incompatible with System 4.1. It worked fine under 4.0. The symptoms: Type a couple of keys, it will lock up. And... Keycaps DA flickers when it tries to see what type of keyboard it is. It flickers between std mac and Mac+ keyboard displays. Really freaky!!! It does this without even using their INIT file!!! As I said, all these items worked fine under 4.0 System. By the way, what works ok: ScrollInit by Andy Hertzfield (Remembers where you scrolled to in a GETor PUTfile call) FKEY Manager (I tested V2.5) Pop-keys from FKEY manager package. Page 2 saver Init file (Allocates Alternate screen buffer on startup so std applications don't womp the area). SCREENSAVE (AutoBlack?) The INIT that loads as Macsbug works fine. Preview Printer driver (Lets you put the printer output to the screen) Anyway thats it for now.... Phil Hunt

-------- Here are a couple of additional items that don't seem to work correctly with system 4.1: * LaserKey, that handy little FKEY utility that allows screen dumps directly to the LaserWriter using command-shift-4 (so that those of us with LaserWriters can do what Apple *should* have built into the system in the first place). * MacsBug behaves strangely. On a MacPlus, boot up the system. Press the Programmer's switch. Type "IL PACKBITS". Works correctly on system 3.2; hangs MacsBug on system 4.1. (If I need a new MacsBug for system 4.1, could someone please send me a copy. I can't do any further development work with system 4.1 until I can make MacsBug work.) -- Herb Weiner (!tektronix!midas!herbw)
