[comp.sys.mac] Sys 3.2/ Finder 5.4 to 4.1/5.5 What's the difference?

ud069225@ndsuvm1.bitnet.UUCP (05/13/87)

I was wondering what changes have been made between these versions.
Are they intended for MacPlus users and are there any incompatibilities
known at this time with common software/hardware? Is it ok to convert over
from 3.2/5.3 to 4.1/5.5?
Thanks, Eric Romo

I have noticed a problem in the desktop in the new system, where the documents
for an application get disconnected from the application itself. For instance,
double clicking a MacWrite document (as opposed to MacWrite itself) doesn't
start MacWrite with that document, it simply says that an application can't be
found for that document. The fix is to rebuild the desktop (hold down command
and option while the finder starts up), but that process loses all comments in
the info windows.

Also, if one person on a net upgrades his (or her) printer drivers, all should
at the same time, especially the LaserWriter 4.0 and Laser Prep 4.0 files. If
there is a mixed system, the LW will reinitialize itself when printing for
different users, as the wrong prep file is downloaded. (This is not a problem,
it is a warning to practice rigor.)

Finally, an editorial opinion. THIS SYSTEM CANNOT RUN ON SINGLE-SIDED FLOPPIES!
Well, that's my conclusion anyway. I built a minimal system (minimum fonts, few
DAs, ImageWriter driver only) and it took up nearly 400K! I conclude that to run
on a single-sided system requires an external drive. This seems to be one more
argument to upgrade your 512K to 512Kenhanced before it's too late! Clearly,
Apple has the "larger" user in mind. This orientation away from "the rest of us"
may be a result of the Mac's belated acceptance in the office, where more and
more power is the key to sales.

You can make a working System 3.2 that takes up about 32K, if you have a
MacPlus and are willing to install NoQuiche, spend some time on
trial-and-error, and give up having "Shut Down" eject your disks (!?).

Has anyone tried a stripped System 4.1? Are the AppleShare-aware parts
of the new Finder isolated enough that you can remove them without making your
Finder bomb?

A 512K Mac doesn't have enough memory for all the patches included in
System 4.1 anyway. For that reason, Apple doesn't recommend running
this system on 512K's or 512Ke's.

You old ROM owners are going to increasingly find yourselves out in
the cold (this is news?) because most developers figure that if you
can't afford $300 for the new ROMs and disk drive (a great deal
for what you get, in my opinion), you aren't going to be spending
much on software, and aren't worth catering to.

Sorry, folks, that's the way it seems to be...

Okay, but how do I get upgraded? I called around locally about my 512K, and
found no-one hereabouts has been able to get the upgrade since December.

What's a poor boy to do? I've got the $300, and more, but I dunno how to find
the upgrade.
