I have a sick HD20. Can anyone suggest a possible solution for these symptoms, short of "backup and reformat"? I apologise for posting on a well worn subject, but I have tried the approaches suggested on previous occasions (check boot blocks, use ***** Recover/ *** Tools etc) to no avail. Thank you very much, Simon. Symptoms -------- On Startup my HD20 displays the Mac icon for a second or so while trying to boot and then goes to the ? disk icon. (ie it wiil not start up the machine. failure occurs during boot - before the Startup screen). The disk will mount normally when the Mac is started from a floppy, but Command-Option-Double Clicking applications or the finder on the HD does not change the "disk on top". History ------- Upgrading system and finder left me with a corrupt system which caused a bomb as soon as Package 6 (IU) was needed (when Oasis started running). Fortunately, I was able use DAs to delete all systems and finders I could find when it ran TMON (as part of my startup sequence before Oasis). The disk would then log on when another disk was used to startup, and I was able to copy good system and finder (3.3/5.4) over. Now the problem is as described initially. o the system was dragged onto the HD with Appleshare off, so new boot blocks should have been written. o the disk verifies as ok under a couple of verify/recover tools. o writing new boot blocks with FEDIT does not help. o I have removed all init files (Jclock etc) from the system folder. As the problem occurs in the boot phase and the Mac itself is healthy, and the system on the HD is pristine and runs fine off floppies and and XP40, it seems the problem ought to lie in the boot blocks, but as I said above, I have written new ones (by dragging a system, and by using FEDIT+). So, what can the matter be? That's the story. Thank you for reading this far. Any suggestions of tools/approaches to try would be very much appreciated. It sounds like your blessed folder is not set properly. Try booting from a floppy and dragging the system file and finder onto the disk again. This should both write the boot blocks and set the blessed folder. -- David Goldsmith Apple Computer, Inc.
