[comp.sys.mac] AlisaTalk and Symbiotics Disk Servers?

titley@btnix.UUCP (05/21/87)

We have recently purchased the AlisaTalk fileserver package together with
four Kinetics FastPath bridges with the intention of linking together our
four Appletalk networks into one big one, and providing fileserver
capability from our Vax11/785.

The problem is that one of our networks has a Symbiotics Diskserver on it
and the AlisaTalk stuff doesn't seem to like it. When the diskserver is
turned off, everthing works fine; when the diskserver is on, we lose VMS
volumes, the printer spooler falls over and I get fed up with the phone
ringing.

The question is: has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything we can
do about it? Is it likely that the Symbiotics is not complying with
Appletalk protocols? Is it likely that AlisaTalk is not complying with
Appletalk?

Any help, sympathy etc welcome

Nigel Titley

I had the same experience with a bernoulli file server and have seen the same
thing with the hayes interbridge. From my experiences as well as info on the
info-appletalk group I have concluded that alisatalk is in no way responsible.
In reality, it turns out the several appletalk devices don't appropriately deal
with bridges like the kinetics box. both iomega and hayes have admitted that
there products are at fault in terms of their non-compatibility with the
kinetics box.

our solution was to dispose of the bernoulli box - it was ripping up disks
as fast as a paper shredder......

AlisaTalk probably is doing things correctly, but don't let the Kinetics
box get away unquestioned. Depending on what code code you are running
in the box (KIP, Kinetics IP, Kinetics DDP, or Kinetics combined gateway)
it may or may not be handling zones correctly. I haven't used the
Symbiotics server, but I am exploring the Kintetics box & have found that
it can cause heaps of trouble when running KIP in an environment with zones.

Perhaps this dialog should be moved to the appletalk news group?
