I just purchased Dove Computer's RamSnap ramdisk program from MacConnection for $36. It was favorably reviewed in the current issue of MacUser magazine. I like the program because it allows you to save different ramdisk configurations in double-clickable files, kind of like switcher sets. It is easy to use but I want to offer a word of warning to potential customers: Unless you have a mac with >=2MB of ram you *MUST* delete the file called "SnapStart" that accompanies the RamSnap icon on the distri- bution disk. Otherwise you will get a "not enough memory" error message and you won't be able to use the RamSnap program. "SnapStart" is a configuration file that automatically loads whenever you run RamSnap. Evidently, Dove felt that most people who bought RamSnap would be using it with their hardware ram upgrades, so they set it up to run on a 2MB mac. It works fine on my standard 1MB Mac Plus now that I have deleted the "SnapStart" icon. This problem is not documented in the current manual, though Dove assured me that in the future they won't be setting up "SnapStart" for a 2MB mac. Incidentally, I was very pleased with their technical support person. He was very friendly, and seemed willing to talk to me until I all my questions were answered. I asked him about the complaints I've been hearing about their memory upgrades and he said that these complaints all pertain to their 512K to 2MB upgrade. He said the 512K mac isn't really designed to accommodate memory upgrades so it is consequently more difficult to install more memory correctly. He said the 1MB to 2MB is much easier and more reliable since it involves putting SIMMS (?) on the Mac Plus's existing memory recepticles. Maybe someone could comment on this. Hope somebody out there finds this helpful. Phillip Todd ..ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!tod4
