[net.music] ABC: "How to be a Zillionaire" minireview/question

gts@wjh12.UUCP (G. T. Samson) (10/17/85)

ABC's new album, "How to be a Zillionaire" (sp? may be missing punctuation)
is a change of style from the previous one, "Beauty Stab", just as "Stab" was a
change from "The Lexicon of Love", their first. Fortunately, this change
works; their music remains varied and interesting.

Apparently, this album has been out for a while in the UK (I think...
correct me if I'm wrong) and 3 singles have already been released over
there. "Be Near Me", the only US single, was actually released in
September of '84 there!

The lyrics on this album are greatly different from what could be found on
"Stab" and "Lexicon" (as one might hope, since they're different albums :-).
This album drops any pretense of meaningfulness. I won't comment on this,
as ABC's sound seems about the same, despite the changes in the band's
makeup. I like the album, though I wouldn't recommend it if it'll be
your first ABC. "Lexicon" is much better.

And now for the question...

Most everyone must have seen the video for "Be Near Me", by now... the new
additions to ABC, Eden and David Yarritu, are blatantly obvious. They
certainly seem to be performing with two of the original members, Martin Fry
and Mark White.

So why do they get no credit whatsoever on the album? David Yarritu is
not listed as playing guitar, or any instrument at all for that matter!
Nor is Eden listed as drummer (as I guess she is, going on the video
alone).

What's the story? Anyone in the UK who reads this have an idea?

I've been wondering about a similar thing. (I'm assuming that David Yarritu is
the short bald guy.) On the videos and the 3 import 12" are cartoons of Martin
Fry, Mark White, David Yarritu & Fiona. I think the 4 also appear on the album.
However, when ABC performed on Nightime, it was Martin Fry, Mark White, Eden &
Gardner. What happened here ? Did David & Fiona leave right after completion of
the album ?

By the way, I think "Be Near Me" was released in the UK around December 1984/
January 1985 since that's when it hit the UK charts. "How To Be A Millionaire"
was the song released in September 1984. Does anyone have the Bond Street Mix
of "How To Be A Millionaire" ? I have the Wall Street Mix which is nothing but
a very fancy dub cut. It drives me crazy to only be able to hear one or two
lines of lyric.
