[comp.sys.mac] NEC JC-1401P3A color monitor with Mac ][ ?

harrow@exodus.dec.com.UUCP (06/13/87)

I could really use some help from someone who has gone down this road:

My MAC ][ is about to arive, but without the color monitor (delayed
1-2 months). I wouldn't want to consider the implications of having
this sit here and not even be able to turn it on, and luckily was able
to borrow a NEC Multisync color monitor, model JC-1401P3A.

From the monitor's manual and an article in MacTutor, it appears that
the cable should be:

MAC ][ DB-15 NEC DB-9
---------------------------

1 Ground 6,7,8,9
2 Red 1
5 Grn/Sync 2
9 Blue 3

HOWEVER:

The Mac ][ video card runs at a vertical rate of 66.7 Hz, and the
NEC's manual indicates that its top vertical rate is 62 Hz!!!

WILL THIS WORK?

If they're using the typical 10% rule, it would seem to fall within
that range, but I don't know...

Has anyone had any experience with trying to use this monitor with the
Mac ][?

Is a modification required to the monitor? (If so, can you supply
details?)

Is my cable pinout correct?

Any solid information will be greatly appreciated, ASAP!

Thanks!

The NEC works, although the color fidelity isn't as good as for
the Apple monitor.

There's some suggestion that Apple's sync signal should be piped to
the NEC's sync line, as in:

				CABLE
NEC DE9 Description Apple video card ("DB"-15)
	1 Red 2 Red
	2 Green 5 Green
	3 Blue 9 Blue
	4 Composite Sync 3 CSync
	5 V. Sync N/C or 1 Ground
	6,7,8,9 Ground 1 Ground

but I haven't tried this personally. Certainly the cable needs to
be well-shielded to avoid picking up interference from things like
hard disk stepper motors.
