[comp.sys.mac] Finder rebuilding of desktop.

chow@batcomputer.tn.cornell.edu (Christopher Chow) (06/16/87)

I try out and throw out alot of public domain/shareware stuff on my hard
disk. Very often these programs have their own icons, so my desktop file
gets bloated up with unnecessary icons. My solution to this problem is to
periodicly rebuild the desktop from the finder by using the <cmd><opt> while
returning to the finder.

Unfortuantely, this also erases all the data I might have put in the
get-info boxes. My question to Apple (and other net people) is:

Do you think the finder ought to be modified so that you can
purge icons from your desktop? I understand that there are cases
when you might have to rebuild the desktop from scratch and throw
out all the get-info comments. Perhaps we could get an
"Clean up desktop" entry on the "Special" menu to remove unneeded
icons and leave rebuilding the desktop at <cmd><opt>.

What do you think?

Why make the Finder do Yet Another operation? I use DiskExpress, which does
what you want quite well, without mucking around with what you want left
alone. Why stuff another piece of code that is rarely used into a program
people already complain about speed and complexity? If a good third party
program is available, use it.

There is a p.d. program called 'purgeicons' floating around that does
just what you describe. If you cannot find it on your friendly neigbor-
hood bbs, email me and I will send you a copy.
