Not long ago I asked for help in getting a font with musical flat and sharp characters. It turns out that the Boston II fonts have these characters (Option-8 and Option-9). However, the Boston font is very wide (that's why it can look so nice). In fact, it is too wide for my purpose of typing up lyric sheets with guitar chords. Some people had suggested using ResEdit to modify an existing font. My plan is modify New York, which is both narrow and fairly pleasant to read. However, I can't figure out what the More/Less Ascent and More/Less Descent menu items really do. I would think that they would alter how low a character went or how high it went. This appears to be important because when I replace the New York characters numbered 187 and 188 (Option-8 and Option-9, I think) with a sharp or flat, the small version of the character that is displayed on the lower right of the screen appears chopped off. When I try to modify the Ascent/Descent feature the character sometimes rises or lowers on the FatBits style display, but not always. Anyway, I'm confused. Can someone in netland help reduce my confusion? Ethan Munson munson@renoir.berkeley.edu ...ucbvax!renoir!munson
