[comp.sys.mac] Macintosh Dhrystones

rs4u+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU.UUCP (06/12/87)

I got my paws on a Mac II the other day, so here's a set of Dhrystones
for all Mac series machines and some others:

Machine Compiler	CPU	OS Registers	No Reg

IBM PC ci-c86 8086	PCDOS 2.0	390 390

IBM AT Miscrosoft C3.0	80286	PCDOS 3.0	847	833

VAX 11/750	Vax-11 C 2.0	--	VMS 1091 958
VAX 11/780	cc --	Unix 5.2	1562 1515
VAX 11/785	cc --	Unix 5.2	2083 2083

Sun 3/75	cc 68020	Sun Unix 4.2	3571 3333

Macintosh Plus	LightspeedC 2.01 68000	Mac ROM (128K)	877 806
Macintosh SE	LSC 2.01	68000	Mac ROM (256K)	1041 980
Macintosh II	LSC 2.01	68020	Mac ROM (256K)	3333 3125

The Sun's 68020 is clocked at 16MHz, I believe; the Mac II is at 15.7 MHz.

The non-Mac results may be out of date; I had a long sheet of Dhrystone
results that I got these results from.

I also ran Dhrystone 1.1 (presumably the same version) using MPW C.
This is what I got:

Machine Compiler	CPU	Registers	No Reg
Macintosh Plus	MPW C 2.0b2	68000	714 675

I haven't run it on a II yet, but the results from a II prototype
with MPW C were also slower than Rich's for LightspeedC, even
when 68020 code generation was specifically enabled.

I heard 16.67 for the Mac II. Who's right?

P.S. And how about a 25mhz Mac II?

According to Chapter 1 of "Macintosh II and Macintosh SE Cards and
Drivers" the correct clock speed for the II is 15.6672 MHz.
Coincidentally, this is equal to the pixel clock rate on the older
Macs, and twice the clock speed of the 68000 in the older Macs.

Maybe on a NuBus card.
