I have heard that the Mac+ SIMMS may or may not work in the Mac II depending on how fast the chips are. I know of several people who have taken Mac+ SIMMs and plugged them into Mac II w/o problem. However, something sticks in my mind because I am sure someone mentioned to me that it couldn't be done. Oh well... if it works, I won't complain. +----------------------+-----------------------------------------------+ | Byron Han | UUCP: {sun, voder, nsc, mtxinu, dual}!apple!han | | Apple Computer, Inc. | CSNET: han@apple.csnet | | 20525 Mariani Ave, | ATTNet: 408-973-6450 | | Cupertino, CA 95014 | GENIE: BYRONHAN APPLELINK: HAN1 | | MS 27Y | CSERVE: 72167,1664 | +----------------------+-----------------------------------------------+ | I do not present myself as speaking for Apple or any other company. | +----------------------+-----------------------------------------------+

I know of several people who have taken The Mac II and new RAM upgrade kits use 120 ns RAM. The older machines (ie, Mac Plus) use 150 ns RAM. It could be that the recent Mac Pluses also use 120 ns RAM, which would account for some SIMM modules working and other not. I think if you examine the RAM chips carefully, you will see an indication of their speed. -- Larry Rosenstein Object Specialist Apple Computer AppleLink: Rosenstein1 UUCP: {sun, voder, nsc, mtxinu, dual}!apple!lsr CSNET: lsr@Apple.com

I have pulled the SIMMs out of my Plus and put them into my II. They were clearly marked -12 on the chips themselves (i.e. 120ns) although the back of the SIMM said -15. I believe the chips. In contrast, the SIMMs in my Mac SE are marked -15, so I left them, although I did pull out the upper floppy drive, and put it into the II. Summary: Look at the chips in your Plus or SE. If they say -12 on them, they are probably OK to use in your II. If they say -15, they are probably not.

Dynamic RAMS are a lot like floppy disks in this reguard. Most of the disks labled single sided work double sided (it's often cheaper to just have one assembly line making disks, and those that don't pass inspection are always single sided, many others happen to be double sided). Many 150 ns RAMs are really 120 ns RAMs (in fact, many 200 ns RAMs are really 150 ns RAMs--this is one of the ways that ATARI cuts costs on the ST--uses 200 ns RAMs at 150 ns speed). Larry's explanation might be right, I haven't looked at the latest batch of Mac Plus SIMMs lately. But in many cases you'll find that 150 ns RAMs pass as 120 ns under all but the most thorough tests (the sort of thing that they go through 1 month after the warranty is over). So, use 150 ns RAMs in your MacII at your own risk! Peter -- Peter "Arrgh" Korn Oh when, oh when will my MacII korn@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU arrive? Does APPLE have the corner on the market for memory upgrade kits for the Mac II and SE? I have seen the SIMMS in pictures and read several articals about the standard SIMM memory package. Standard for who.......APPLE? I have only seen one or two third party memory upgrade kits and non of them say if the their SIMM modules will work in the MAC II or SE. Can anybody out there shed some light on the subject? tektronix!reed!omen!bucket!martyl (Marty Lee)
