I am looking for Macintosh database program with which to manage a large (30,000+ entry) database of classical music recordings. The program must have these capabilities: must have variable-length text records. a 'glossary' function similar to Microsoft Word, where you can type a short sequence of letters which will expand to a larger piece of text, for fast entry of frequently-entered text items. The Tempo desk accessory is not sufficient for this purpose - the user of the database will not want to have to remember large numbers of control- key sequences. must be very programmable: many of the text fields must contain data in a certain form, eg. "String Quartet" but not "Quartet for Strings", and there should be some way to prompt users for the correct forms. must be able to import and export data in a variety of formats - the data currently resides on a UNIX systems, and the program must be able to read in standard ASCII text and divide it up into records in the correct fashion. I'd like to hear information and suggestions concerning the various databases on the market - I have seen Microsoft Works and Omnis 3 (though not Omnis 3+), and neither of these databases is sufficient for our needs. Please MAIL all responses - I don't read this newsgroup very often. I'll summarize to the net later. I'm fully aware that a database of this size required LOTS of external storage - I'd also like to hear about hard disks units in sizes >20 meg. Thanks in advance, Jason May
